English as an Additional Language (EAL)

As our pupils come from all over the world, some have limited experience of English. These pupils receive extra support from specialist EAL teachers allowing them to develop their English skills rapidly.

This support continues until the pupil is able to cope with the demands of the curriculum. Intensive small group tuition, for which there is a supplementary fee, provides a perfect environment to enable the pupil's full integration into the appropriate class with a minimum of delay.

There are limited places in both the Primary and Secondary school (up to Year 10) for students who are either non-speakers of English or have a limited knowledge of English. The small class sizes and expertise of our dedicated EAL teachers ensure that all EAL students benefit from the programme.

Mandarin and Chinese Culture

We regard the study of Mandarin and Chinese Culture as a vital part of the education of all pupils at the British International School, Shanghai.

In addition to the strong Mandarin courses, we also provide a variety of Extra Curricula Activities (ECAs) for children to learn about Chinese Culture.  This programme enables children to 'see' China through hands-on experiences and from different perspectives.

Newcomers to the language have the opportunity to develop their conversational skills and basic knowledge of Chinese characters in MFL (Mandarin as Foreign Language) courses which include IGCSE level. There is also an opportunity for those children, who have a high degree of fluency in Mandarin, to study MNS (Mandarin for Native Speakers) courses leading to proficiency in speaking, reading and writing Mandarin and to take formal examinations at IGCSE and IB Level.
