Head Girl and Head Boy

The roles of Head Girl and Head Boy in both the Primary and Secondary schools are very important ones.

Secondary Head Girl and Head Boy

Alessandra Mariani and Maurice Dusault

Hello! I’m Alessandra Mariani. This is my fifth year in Shanghai and as a student at Pudong Campus.  I am currently completing the final year of the International Baccalaureate programme.

One thing I really love about IB is Theory of Knowledge.  It is thanks to this course that I discovered my biggest passions: debating ethical arguments and watching TED videos. As many of you may know, TED is a well-known organisation that holds conferences around the world to deliver ideas worth spreading. As soon as I heard that a TEDx (an independently organised TED event) conference was being hosted last August in HangZhou, I decided to take the train and go see it.  Since then, my love for the topics shared by passionate TED speakers has increased day by day. At that time, I thought, ‘I wonder if I will ever stand behind a microphone at a conference like this one and deliver a speech myself?’  In the event, I was invited to the York School in Toronto, Canada, to speak at a TEDx conference only weeks after that.

When I was elected Head Girl, I already had a clear idea of what I was going to do in this role. My aims for this school have been not only to do whatever I can to improve it, in ECAs and smaller issues, but also to raise awareness about bullying by bringing forward, together with the Head Boy, a Bullying Council. We have reinvigorated the Student Council with brand new ideas and members.  Every Friday, we meet to share our enthusiasm and initiate new projects. One of my main aims is to improve communications between students across the Secondary School. I believe that this is the way to start removing barriers between Year Groups and at the same time give every student an opportunity to have their say, to have a voice.

As Student Leaders, it is our duty to be available at all times to those who have ideas for change and improvement for our school and the services that it offers because, in the words of the old Chinese saying, ‘one tree alone cannot make a forest’.

Primary Head Girl and Head Boy

Bella Gualano and Joseph Chong

Hello my name is Bella. I am from Winchester which is a small, beautiful city in the UK.   Winchester is very historic and used to be the capital city of England between Norman and Saxon times. I joined Pudong in January and whilst, at first, I was sad about leaving my friends, family and school in the UK, the welcome I received at Pudong meant I didn't feel like the "new girl" for very long.

I love being part of our cosmopolitan Pudong family and always do my best to make sure that new pupils feel welcomed in the same way as I was.  Even if I do not speak their language, I find a smile and a giggle is often a good start!

My hobbies are dancing, drama, singing and swimming and, when I have spare time, I also enjoy drawing, reading, hanging out with my friends and looking after Shadow, my black cat.

For me, being Head Girl is not about the badge or the fancy title.  Being Head Girl is an opportunity to be a role model for others and an ambassador for the school of which I am so proud to be a part.

I will put my heart and soul into doing the best job as I can; and, into working with Joseph, our deputies and fellow Year 6 prefects to make this year the best ever for all Primary pupils.  This will be my small way of sharing my talents, helping others to be the best they can be and giving back to the school that has already given me so much.

Hello everyone! My name is Joseph Zachary. I come from Selangor, a federal territory state in Malaysia. I joined Pudong Campus 3 three years ago. I wanted to be Head Boy because I have many ideas on how to help our school so that we will be the best school in Shanghai.

Whenever I have some free time, I play football and rugby with my friends. This August, I participated in a world karate championship called the 12th Funakoshi Gichin Karate-do Cup. I managed to place in the top 16 for my age group. In total, there were people from 36-40 countries participating.
